THANK YOU FOR FIXING. My logitch light up mouse lol plays it fine. Now to finally play it again after 200 years.. UPDATE: The high DPI mouse bug has been fixed. You now have more of a reason to buy this incredible game.Alright, listen up folks, before I review the actual game I’m going to take a minute to make a very clear note.If you are going to buy this game because you grew up with the NES port, don’t. This is the DOS and enhanced PC port that:-looks very different (and might I add, *cough* BETTER *cough*) from the NES version-lacks the music you love so much-is not 100% identical to the NES version (NES version had certain things cut because of Nintendo’s strict content policy back then)If you happen to want to play the NES version, your only hope is to download an emulator and ROM (oh no, piracy of a 30 year-old game!). If you want to play the PC version in a much more modern gamer-friendly state, get Maniac Mansion Deluxe from the Internet. It’s free and has enhanced graphics, lest your 4K HDR eyeballs can’t bear to look at this 16-color masterpiece.NOW WITH THAT OUT OF THE WAY... time for the actual review.I love Maniac Mansion. It’s one of my favorite games and despite it practically being a relic dug up from a tomb at this point it still holds up as one of the best adventure games out there. There are multiple characters to choose from, all with their own skills and useful abilities. The game world is very colorful (not literally) and there’s a lot of charm around every corner. There’s a whole lot of stuff going on all the time in this game and that’s what I love about it—and not to mention, it was one of the first truly nonlinear games out there. With a plot and characters based on B-movie horror archetypes, it somehow turns this stuff into gold with the addition of fun dialogue, creative environment, and well-executed humor. And it didn’t completely destroy the “horror” factor, either—accidentally running into any of the Edisons on your quest to save the dumb cheerleader is actually quite terrifying, even without any music.I’m not so sure how much more I can say about the game without totally spoiling the entire experience, but I do want to say that if you ever get stuck on any puzzles, don’t be afraid to google the solutions as this was a game made back when developers perceived gamers as psychic mind genies who opened envelopes with microwaves (hey, I just solved a puzzle for you!) also once again if you want the NES version get an emulator and a ROM and if you want to play a more modern version of the game, then get Deluxe. Complete with MIDI soundtrack! Also if you’ve played Maniac Mansion and liked it, make sure to check out Thimbleweed Park—it’s a very similar game released just last year by the exact same guys who designed MM.Oh, and one more quick note before I sign off...Don’t be a tuna head.. What a nice surprise! All the major Lucarts graphic adventure games have been released, except this. Until now. It would have been nice to get a remake like Day of the Tentacle, but this is good enough. And it comes with both C64 and Amiga(Enhanced) versions.. It's pretty good.. great classic game, only downside is cursor control.EDIT: update for cursor control works great.. For those already familiar with the game, this includes both the original PC version and the enhanced PC version released about a year later. There are no gameplay differences between the two versions, the enhanced version just has better and more detailed graphics, but the original version has a higher nostalgia factor, at least in my opinion. If you've played the NES version that's a descent port, but these versions are far superior, but the puzzles and gameplay are pretty much the same.If you're not familiar with the game, Maniac Mansion is Lucasarts first point-and-click adventure game. In it you play as Dave and any two of his six friends as they search a creepy mansion for Dave's girlfriend, who has been kidnapped by Mad Scientist Dr. Fred. It's a cliche 50s sci-fi horror B-movie plot, and the game is full of the quirky humor Lucasarts adventure games are known for. It was designed by Ron Gilbert, better known as the creator of the first two Monkey Island games.Maniac Mansion was one of the earliest adventure games to do away with the command line and go entirely point-and-click. Deja Vu did it a couple years earlier (and there may even be earlier examples I'm unaware of), but it was the success of Maniac Mansion that would eventually make it standard for graphic adventures. The game also features NPCs that move around the mansion and have their own scripted events, some of which happen independent of the player. There are only 7 NPCs and a handful of events in the game, but even today most graphic adventures have static NPCs that only move or act in response to the player. The semi-autonomous characters in Maniac Mansion makes the game feel more like a living story, and less like a puzzle the player moves through.Unlike most adventure games, the player controls three characters they can switch between at any time, and some puzzles involve using multiple characters. One of those characters will always be Dave, but at the beginning of the game the player can pick any two of Dave's six friends to join him. Each of the friends comes with a different personality and a different set of skills. How you solve some of the puzzles is going to be dependent on which friends you've chosen. The game also has multiple endings, and some of the endings are only available if certain friends are in your group. This gives the game a good amount of replayability, much more than most adventure game have.On the negative side, there are a few ways Dave or one of his friends can die, and most of the time a dead character will make the game unwinnable since they get buried with their inventory which may contain a necessary item. Most of the puzzles are pretty simple, with the majority being find item A and bring it to point B. Overall they're typical of an 80s era adventure game. I know some folks find 80s era adventure game logic eosteric, but I've never had a problem understanding it. Although there are multiple soulutions through some parts depending on which friends are with you, most of the puzzles only have a single solution, and a good deal of the game's fun comes from exploration, so repeated play throughs to find the alternate endings tend to be over quickly and not nearly as fun as the first run.If you're at all into 80s and 90s adventure games, this is a must buy. If you'd like to give classic adventure games a try, Maniac Mansion is a great place to start. It's point-and-click interface is much easier for the uninitiated to figure out than games that require you to type commands and know which nouns and verbs to use, and it's one of the best and most influential games of the genre.
